Since I moved to New York my smartphone has been getting more use than ever. In a city this size, with so much going on, it’s a good idea to make life as easy as possible. I have found that these 5 apps are essential for thriving in New York City and having them close at hand will make life in the Big Apple much more effortless and much more fun!
The first thing you’ll notice is there is no Uber/Lyft/Juno or Google Maps. This is because they are pretty much essential in any city and I’ve been using them long before New York. Anyway, here goes;
1. CityMapper
It may sound obvious but it took me longer than I’m willing to admit to download a subway app. Access to real time station info and service changes is a life-saver – especially for late at night and weekends. After downloading a few apps for this – Citymapper proved to be the best solution with many features above and beyond the basics.
2. Venmo
Paying the bill can be awkward with a group of friends. Some only bring cash, some only have cards and then you spend time awkwardly dividing up the tab. Or maybe you want to book something for your friends but know you will never see those dollars again. Either way this is no longer a problem with Venmo – essentially a social network payment app – making it easier than ever to pay your debts, and get paid!
3. Revolut
In my opinion, an essential for any international travellers. Revolut takes the pain out of foreign exchange with no transfer fees. Think Transferwise but even more user-friendly, Revolut even has the functionality of Venom. The only problem is that it probably hasn’t quite caught on with your friends yet.
A Revolut account also comes complete with a debit card and mobile app making it easy to access cash anywhere – or block your card if you lose it!
4.Seamless
Ok, I will. Combine this with Yelp or TimeOut to find the very best places to eat in your neighborhood and then get them to deliver – simples.
5. Coffee Meets Bagel
Tinder is very 2013, and if you want to get on the dating scene in New York City (and let’s be honest, you do) Coffee Meets Bagel is the best of a lot of very similar dating apps.
With a limited number of selections each day, and only 7 days to strike up a decent conversation and get digits. CMB favors the serious users – very few time-wasters here!
