The warm summer weather arrives (ok… we should say less cold and rainy…) and it’s time to go out to enjoy the sun, listen to music in the parks, in the streets with the buskers or watch street performances. Its spring and we enjoy each ray of sunlight so let’s see what we can plan in Cork until the end of this beautiful (we hope) spring and summer!
Here is our short list of outdoor events and festivals which will take place from May:
Africa Day Cork
On the 28th of May, there will be an African atmosphere which will settle into the Bishop Lucey Park in the city centre. African artists will perform and create life next to Grand Parade. The African community will also parade and your body will quiver to the rhythm of African culture. Have a look on the Facebook event and take a stroll on the 28th!
Summer Jam 2016-Fitzgeralds Park
The 3rd edition of this festival will take place in May and more precisely on Sunday 29th. There will be musicians who will perform on the bandstand of Fitzgerald’s Park. It is a good occasion to hear new bands and singers with your friends, set in the most beautiful Park of the city. Entrance is free and that’s the first such event of the year in Cork so but as always, prepare for all weathers.
Keep an eye on the events in Cork to see the full line-up!
Cork Midsummer Festival
Again this year the Cork Midsummer Festival offers a large choice of artistic performances. Musicians, actors, singers, dancers and other artists are already planned in the programme. For both of the weekends of the 17th to 19th and of the 24th to 26th of June there is no circus which will astonish young and old yet but the programme is not definitive! So from time to time look at the events website to plan your midsummer festival! There is something for every taste and every generation but also every purse since some events are free (have a look as even some are free, you need to book your place before!) but you need also to pay for others (it is for the most famous performers of the festival). For the gourmands, a market will take place on Emmet Place on those weekends from 11 am to 5 pm. On the first Sunday (the 19th) take part in the picnic at Fitzgerald’s Park and enjoy the artists who will make an appearance.
City Spectacular – The Laya Healthcare Street Performance
We already spoke a bit about street performers but on the 16th and 17th of July it’s to a real street performances festival into which you can go to see theatre, music, contortionist, circus artists! You can also take part in workshops such as learning to juggle. On the website, have a look on the page to see the different artists who will perform in Cork (that festival has an edition in Dublin too) during that free festival. Follow the link to find the Map of Fitzgerald Park for that weekend and the programme.
General Street performances
There is a dedicated event for street performances but if you have already been to Cork you must know that you can hear daily buskers in the streets. If you don’t know the Rebel city, here are some places to watch original street performances:
- In front of the post office on Oliver Plunkett street, singers, guitar players, bands have their own musical universe. By sun there is no day without hearing one of them (with an “Evening Echo” background most of the time!).
- On Patricks street, on the Brown Thomas side the type of street performances are more diversified: of course there are often musicians but also draftsmen, mime artists, human statues and sometimes…… strange dress up…
- In front of Bishop Lucey Park some jugglers practice their art even some night with “fire poi” too when the numerous pubs and clubs of the city are already closed.
- On the website of CorkCircus we can see some of the circus street performers that you could meet while walking across Cork city.
