My move to Australia wasn’t easy but if there is one thing I have learned it is that a great job interview can be the key to your success abroad.
It is important to start with a good experience, having the opportunity to show the Australian job market how valuable you can be and the experience you can bring to the country from your home land. Feeling nervous is normal (and accepted by the employers of course), but besides the excitement that we always have when facing an interview, there are a few things we can take into account to make our interview succeed.
Good presentation:
That’s important as it is in any other country, but if you are applying for a job facing the public, dressing well can be important to create a good impression.
SMILE
And I type it in capital letters because it is very important. You know that smiling shows that people are confident about themselves? It can be the key for your success.
Speak slowly
We tend to feel nervous as well when we have language limitations. If English is not your first language, you probably want to impress the employer and sometimes we tend to over perform. Our accent can be difficult to understand for the listener, so speaking slowly won´t be a downside in your interview. It will help the person in front of you to understand you better.
Spontaneous
Interviewers in Australia are sick of dealing with overseas applicants that match perfectly the catalogue criteria of a potential employee. Being spontaneous can make all the difference. If you show yourself as you are, with your principles and opinions, the Aussies will like you better. Leave the script aside if you want to achieve the perfect job interview.
Shameless!
And last but not least, let me give you this advice: Show them how proactive you are! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking English. They expect that since they read in your CV that English is not your mother tongue. Don’t let the frustration of not knowing 100% of the language dominate you. Be yourself and it will surprise you how good Australians are understanding foreigners. They will make the effort, so nothing to be afraid of!
