Every summer in the land of castles, ghosts and whiskey, in the capital of Scotland, the “Edinburgh International Festival” takes place and it is one of the most famous arts festivals in the world. Although a large Scottish representation is in the festival, there is an important place for international artists. This year the Edinburgh Festival will take place between 3rd and 31st of August.
Edinburgh has a standing as a city of culture, and festivals like this confirm this stature. Opened in 1947 as an idea for to “provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit” after the Second World War, it has evolved to have the presence of 25,000 international artists from 43 different countries, a thousand accredited media and provide a strong stimulation to the Scottish economy.
Music, theatre, opera and dance are the main insignia of the festival, with forums, workshops and literary recitals not lacking during these hectic weeks in the city.
Moreover, this year has a high profile of two historical events: The First World War, on the centennial of its beginning, and the establishment of democracy in South Africa, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
The festival takes place mainly in six historic and iconic scenes like The Edinburgh Playhouse, Festival Theatre, Usher Hall, The Queen’s Hall, Kings Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre. Also you can find some performances in the streets.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, has one of the most striking performances. Every night, from 1st to 23rd August, on the terrace of Edinburgh Castle, a parade of military bands accompanied a famous bagpipe concert takes place. You have to see it!
