The cathedral of St. Fin Barre’s is a beautiful Anglican church in neo-gothic style that embellishes the southern suburbs of Cork, looking out on the bank of the river Lee.
It’s particularly popular for tourists; often they stop on the bridge of Grand Parade to photograph it at sunset.
On the eastern facade stands the statue of a golden angel intent on playing two long trumpets, donated by the architect William Burges after the construction of the sacred building.
According to the legend the ringing of the angelic trumpets will sound to alert the people of Cork of the imminent end of the world and allow citizens to be among the first to enter heaven.
No fear near the banks the banks of the Lee for the fatal predictions of Maya: the beginning of 2013 the trumpets are silent. For the apocalypse can wait a little bit!
