- What is the NIN?
The NIN is the National Insurance Number, your own personal account number in the UK. It is unique to you and you keep the same one all your life. All residents working in the UK have a NIN. UK nationals are issued with them automatically at age 16 years. Non-UK nationals working in the UK will have to apply for one. It’s made up of numbers and letters (like this: AB 12 34 56 C). National Insurance numbers cannot be used for the purpose of identification.
- Why do I need the NIN?
The NIN makes sure that the National Insurance contributions and tax you pay are properly recorded against your name. You need it if you work in the UK, but you are able to start work before you apply for it, as you can be given a temporary number by your employer. You will need these contributions and credits when you come to claim benefit
- How can I apply for the NIN?
You need to make an appointment to have an “evidence of identity” interview. You can make an appointment through your local Jobcentre Plus (Tel. 0845 600 0643).
- What documents do I need to get the NIN?
You’ll only need your I.D. or passport, your driving license (if you have one), employment documents (such as record of payments or your own contract) and residence or naturalisation documents proving you’re living in the UK (such as your rental contract)
You can find out more informations from the HM Revenue and Customs website.
