The latest Oscars ceremony, that was broadcasted last Sunday from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California has celebrated many British actors and producers but also one Irish. Birdman was the big winner of the Oscars this year, but weirdly none of the two best actors and actresses is a part of the winning movie.
Indeed the Oscar of the best actor this year has been given to Eddie Redmayne for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The theory of everything, the biopic movie about the life of Stephen Hawking. The British actor born in London in 1982 had already won the golden globe of the best actor and everybody knows that it happens a lot that the winner of the Golden Globe wins also the Oscar.
The actress are not in rest as well, Julianne Moore, the American is also a British woman because at the death of her mother, she decided to adopt the British nationality in the goal to honour her mother’s memory. The actress won the statue because of her role in Still Alice as Dr. Alice Howland. We should also not forget that another English woman was nominated against Julianne Moore, Felicity Jones for her acting in The Theory of everything.
English movies were also very present at the ceremony even if none of them won the Oscar of the best movie; they all left the ceremony with at least one Oscar. The Grand Budapest Hotel that has won 4 Oscars (9 nominations) for best original score, best production design, best makeup and hairstyling and best costume design is a British/German production. Imitation Game won one (8 nominations) for best adapted screenplay and the movie is a UK/US production and finally The Theory of everything has won one Oscar (5 nominations) as well, the best actor as previous said with Eddie Redmayne.
Finally, we can also speak about the honorary academy award received by Maureen O’Hara the Irish actress that has played in more than 55 movies in less than 50 years. She was the second actress after Myrna Loy to win an award without being nominated before and on the award she received was written this inscription: “To Maureen O’Hara, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength ».
Now, we just have to hope that the British cinema works as best as possible this year and that they will be even more present next year at the American ceremony.
