Picturesque villages where you can breathe the fresh air of the Ocean, stay in one after the other along the Atlantic coast of Ireland. To give tourists the opportunity to visit easily this part of the Emerald Island, Fáilte Ireland (the National Tourism Development Authority) has started a project called the Wild Atlantic Way: 2500 km in 9 counties, a touring route that links villages and cities, passing through breath-taking landscapes.
Rugged, unspoilt, intriguing, challenging, adventurous, resilient and independent: these are the key adjectives that a venue needs in order to become part of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Clearly, the Ocean must be the main focus of the entire project. The venues must be able to tell the story of how the Atlantic has shaped and influenced their product or offering. They have to focus on where the land meets the sea along the Atlantic coast and have to embrace the wild and rugged nature of their location.
The route has been planned considering the quality of the streets: the streets must be safe for both cars and bicycles and must offer parking areas, restaurants and public toilets; the signposts must be clear and visible. The route will be fully sign-posted by early April.
The leisure and the cultural factors have not been ignored. Not only landscapes and Nature, but also visitor attractions and sport venues for all the family.
The Wild Atlantic Way offers 500 visitor attractions, 580 festivals, 17 trails, and 50 looped walks, as well as 53 Blue Flag beaches and 120 golf courses.
Fáilte Ireland is confident that this initiative will boost the flow of tourism in Western Ireland, beyond the most famous paths and the well-known destinations.
The goal is to turn the Wild Atlantic Way into one of the world’s great tourism routes like the Great Ocean Road in Australia, and the Pacific Coast Highway in the US.
The National Tourism Development Authority has started the promotion and the sale of the Wild Atlantic Way. This is a major opportunity for web marketing experts. Finally when the project will go at full speed, it will offer a lot positions and opportunities for the Irish tourism industry.
